Technically speaking, the gorge sits on the Bavarian-Tyrolean border, and we found ourselves crisscrossing back and forth between Germany and Austria over the course of two hours. The 10.4-mile Leutaschklamm Gorge Loop is a new-ish development in the Alps and one I'd not discovered until I started researching attractions to hit up on this trip.

Leutasch Gorge spans the border between Leutasch Austria and Germany. On reading the information signs it was clear that we were entering a mysterious watery realm, owned by the fairies and goblins that live in the gorge, where the water swirls in a fast moving torrent between high rocky cliffs.

A fine example is the Leutaschklamm Gorge: a deep gorge that runs through the mountains on the border between Leutasch (Austria) and Mittenwald (Germany). It is here that you can see the impressive result of millions of years of erosion up close. Basically, the leutaschklamm area exists of two parts.

Open to hikers from early May, the Leutasch Ghost Gorge at the entrance to the Leutasch Valley is a wonderful day out for families with children. There are three hiking trails in the gorge, including sections leading along wooden walkways. The longest trail is three kilometres from start to finish.

The walkway itself is pretty level, and it crosses the gorge twice on two suspended bridges. There are two circular trails in the gorge, one from Leutasch and the other from Mittlewald. The two trails cover both banks of the gorge, and meet in the lower suspended bridge, which has great views of the mountains to the east.
