The Kooikerhondje is an old breed from the Netherlands and is believed to have been developed in the 16 th century. They were bred as tolling dogs for luring ducks into traps. As duck populations dwindled, however, the Kooiker dog fell out of use. By World War II, the Kooikerhondje was nearly extinct, but fanciers in Holland resurrected the breed.
