TIL f14,f18 both uses the external tank for fuel first before using the internal fuel. I think literally every aircraft does this. The f-86 and f5 the external tanks feed into the internal tanks, the internal tanks are the only tanks the engines feed from. So does the f-14 AFAIK. You still have fuel in the externals as you go under the internal.
